Sebring it on Empty
PostSubject: Sebring it on   Sebring it on EmptyMon 23 Jan 2017, 4:19 pm

Well I got a couple hours today to start on a tune for the 12 hours. Managed to put in over 30 laps and managed what I think will be a competitive time. No clue at this point. Not gonna lie, the car is a little bouncy but the track is very rough. Escpecially the spots where it goes from concrete to asphalt. Anywas, I hit 2:02.018 as a fast and was actually averaging 2:02.2s. Once you learn where the bumps are and where you can really put the power down it's easy to run consistent here. I'll do my best to get an hour so free this evening so you can try it out and see what you think. Oh and that was on engine map 2 starting on a full tank. That lap came on lap 8 of my last run. With a qualifying set up I think I can get into the 1 second range. Either way I'm sure Josh will be faster if he is as good here as he was at Daytona.

Just checked danlisa and top times are high 1:59s. I'm sure that map 3 though. So maybe 2 flat for top split and making it on the broadcast. Maybe a 2:01 can get us there?

Yeah true. Lots of guys in the low 2 min range. We have a lot of time to make up. But it's 2 months out. I know we can get close to a 2:01. Just gotta work on the tune in a hot track. I'm sure the race session will be a hot track.

Sebring it on Empty
PostSubject: Re: Sebring it on   Sebring it on EmptyWed 25 Jan 2017, 3:28 pm

I got in another hour of testing today. After 15 laps with a new tune, I was running consistent 2:03.6's. Fast lap was 2:03.349. It's good that it isn't much faster than my consistent lap time. Means the tune is stable enough to run very similar lap times over and over again. I then threw together a quick qualify tune. In qualify trim I ran 2:02.9 as an average and 2:02.7 as a fast. Not fast enough to make main lobby but good enough to get a good start in the lobby we will run. Hopefully close to the front so we don't have to worry about traffic. Maybe Josh can cut another half second off.

Conditions were default at 78 degree ambient temp and 103 degree track temp.

Overall the new tune is much more stable than the one we ran the other night. Tire pressure is a good deal lower and I messed with the toe and brakes as well. Helped stabilize the car a lot. When we get another chance I'll get you the updated tune. Maybe we can hop on this weekend sometime and turn a good 50 laps or so and see how the wear looks and pressures are after a full stint (stint would be around 30 laps I'm estimateing, maybe a little less). I want to say after 10 laps I used around 10 1/2 gallons, that's on map 2. We can try map 1 and see if the fuel gain is worth the time loss. Obviously map 3 is out for race use, unless we want to gain time on a short stop strategy for a stint.

Oh and fun fact, I only had 8x incident after that test session. And 4 of those came when I went too tight into turn 1 and hit the wall! May not end with over 250x as a team this time.

PostSubject: Re: Sebring it on   Sebring it on EmptySat 28 Jan 2017, 8:59 am

Thanks for sending the set. I ran for about an hour this morning, and I was much faster. I got down to a 2:04:00. I think there is still plenty left for me to pick up too. I was still working out how deep I could drive it in on a few corners and I think I was braking way too early. My only real issue is that I don't have the confidence getting back to the gas. It feels like the rear tires are sliding a lot. I upped the rear air pressure a pound, but that didn't really seem to do much. Maybe they come in better as the run goes on? I only ran about 5 laps at a time.

PostSubject: Re: Sebring it on   Sebring it on EmptySat 28 Jan 2017, 9:13 am

Yeah it's a long run tune. As I was tuning it I was running 30 lap or so stints then making changes. The pressures are low because they heat up and build pressure a good deal over a run. I took a little take out and made a few other small adjustments to try and get the understeer out. It'll be a little looser at first but once the tires come in the car feels great. It won't over or understeer, unless you overdrive the car. We can throw a lobby up sometime and you can watch my line and brake points and we can hopefully do a few full stint runs and see what you think.

Also if we continue to run the endurance races and get enough drivers to be competitive I plan on purchasing motec to really get some spot on tunes. I never realised how accurate and how much data is in iracing until finding motec.

PostSubject: Re: Sebring it on   Sebring it on EmptyTue 31 Jan 2017, 9:27 pm

The session I just ran was in late afternoon....is that when race is?

So I'm down to low 2:03's, with a 2:02:5xx fast lap. I still feel like the rear isn't in the track. Lots of trouble getting back to the throttle on exit, especially turn 1. I didn't get a chance to tweak anything tonight, but I might run a couple things past you this week.

Not sure. I looked at the race from last year and it was afternoon, but I don't remember when late afternoon Was added so Idk. I want to try a while new set up this weekend. I think it may help with that issue. I don't think the problem is the set up itself. The track is rough and I think we are hitting the bump stops. Gonna do a new setup without them and see if that will fix the issue.

Sebring it on Empty
PostSubject: Re: Sebring it on   Sebring it on EmptyWed 01 Feb 2017, 4:11 pm

I spent another hour today rebuilding the set up. The bump stops are gone and that alone did a tremendous amount to stablise the car over turns 1 and 17. I also made some dramatic changes to the dampening. The car has a little more rake now as well but I kept it modest since as the fuel gets used that will get worse.

The downforce has gone up by a pretty good amount but I only lost 1 mph on the back stretch. The higher downforce mixed with removing the bump stops basically only makes the downforce noticable at low speeds. Once you hit high speeds the air on the spoiler pushes the rear down more because the car is no longer resting on the bump stops at high speed. It can squat more now reducing the drag at high speeds.

I am excited for you guys to try it out. I didn't gain a lot of time but the car feels much more stuck to the road now. Especially the rear. Remember I like my cars to overseer more than under. That's probably why y'all were saying the car was too loose. It should work much better for you now. I'll have a lobby up Friday. Hopefully we can all get in and try out the new tune. That's the third redo on the tune by the way... This track is tough to tune for.

Sebring it on Empty
PostSubject: Re: Sebring it on   Sebring it on EmptyMon 13 Feb 2017, 1:33 pm

Quick update on stint info.

Fuel:
I just ran a full stint practice session. From a full tank I got 30 laps on track and pulled into pits with .6 gallons of fuel on lap 31, not enough to do another full lap. It took damn near exactly one hour and lap times held consistent at a 2:03.4-2:03.7 average until about 7 gallons of fuel was left. Then you could really feel how light the rear had gotten. It turned in okay but the traction control was having to work on exit. Dropped lap times into the 2:04.0 range.

Tires:
Tires heated up over the stint to exactly what I was hoping. They also built pressure to within .3 psi of where I wanted them. So on that front they are great. However, at the end of this stint the front tires were worn down to 76% and the rear at 83%. I thought okay that's not much worse than they were at Daytona and people were double stinting the tires. So I went back out for a few laps and I do not recommend double stints here on tires. I was losing a full second a lap because now the car was at full weight again and it didn't want to brake at the point I had been in the first stint and also didn't want to turn in, you could really feel the wear on the fronts. Thats 30 seconds over the full stint and it will only get worse as you drive farther. So in reality maybe closer to 45 seconds to a full minute loss once the tank goes empty and tires are at 50%. I just don't think there's any advantage here.

Strategy:
I'm thinking, if we stay clean, pit every 30, don't risk trying to get that extra 1 lap in, it's not worth it. We will end up picking up time overall with fresh tires so get fresh rubber at every stop. Most important is to stay clean and don't try to turn your fastest lap every lap. That'll only wear the car and have higher risk for accident. Over that run I accrued 7x from running wide on the same 2 corners. I can live with that. I never lost control or hit anything. If we can have a stint like that every round we have a chance to win. The guys that won in our lobby at daytonea only won because they were literally the only team that didn't crash.

Hope this helps and we need to get up and set a stint schedule again for this one. Also decide if we are running 8am or 8pm race.

PostSubject: Re: Sebring it on   Sebring it on EmptyWed 15 Feb 2017, 9:53 am

Hey guys so I'm running on both Tora and Iracing. I am going to run down the list of events i plan on doing since the Tora schedule and Iracing schedule are very similar

March 11th-12th is the 12 hours for Sebring for both websites. I will be running on Iracing for that event.
March 26th I can run the 2 hours at Texas for Tora
April 22nd I will run the 24 hours of the Ring with Iracing
April 23rd If needed i can run the 2 hours at the Glen for Tora
June 4th If needed i can run the 2 hours at Indianapolis for Tora
June 10th I will run the 24 hours of Le Mans with Iracing
June 25th Tora and Iracing have events the same day I will try to split my time for this as they are both short enough events
There are events past this I dont want to say yes or know to as its to far in advance. I will try my best to stick to this plan.

Great write up fuel, tires, and strategy. My preference would be to run the 8am, but I don't really care.

I'm fine with that too. If you are on and see our 4th man on, let him know. That way we can go ahead and plan that. I'm gonna look for 2 more and maybe we can field 2 cars. That would be awesome.

Yeah, I'll hit him up on the private message on iRacing tonight.

I made a new google spreadsheet to schedule out the stints. I didn't fill anything out yet, but the link is below.

I'm going to try and get on tonight and run some practice laps and get a full stint in. Did you make any changes to the set-up recently? By the way, setting the traction control properly was a life changing experience. HAHA!

Yeah that'll make a noticeable difference. But no the set up is still the same. Should be called Sebring setup 4. That's the latest one I have done. If you catch roca on I know he has the proper one. Thanks for the doc.

PostSubject: Re: Sebring it on   Sebring it on EmptySun 12 Mar 2017, 12:00 pm

Alright well we ended up in 37th I think it was. Managed to stay mostly clean for the remainder of the race. Both roca and I had an off that caused some damage but nothing too spectacular. Not bad considering we were pretty much in last of all the cars that took the green. We did figure out that double stinting tires is okay here. We were turning the same lap times on old tires as we were on new. Overall, once again, we learned a good deal here and can take that with us to nurburgring. Hopefully it will transfer to the Porsche and work the same. I'm thinking it will since its the same tire model. Plus the Porsche is a lot lighter, good for the tires, but runs a lot less aero, bad for the tire wear. I will do some extensive testing this coming week and have a tune ready by the weekend so we can start turning laps.

Once again, it was a blast and this endurance racing thing is great. If we keep improving and learning like we are, we may be in contention for a split win by the end of the year. Nein Shiza!
